I first heard about racism, seriously, in the fifth grade. At Orchard we participated in injustice plays and this is truly the closest I have ever come to experiencing racism. We broke into small groups and touched on woman's rights, slavery, and the treatment of native americans. I was in the play about the famous Indian Chief, Sitting Bull. I was shocked at how cruelly the Native Americans were treaty.
At the schools I have attended we also watched movies and read books regarding racism and injustice. It was always amazing to me how much these awful ideas influenced and were apart of our society. As Wachtel states, "our society is deeply flawed by racial inequities." These inequities, I believe help to shape our society and did shape our society into what it is today.

Kenzie, I have had similar experiences with racism, very few if any at all. But like you I have constantly been educated about them and both school I have attended dramatically encouraged the importance of diversity. Although I couldn't identify many direct racist events in my life when I rethought it in regards to write this assignment I realized in truth I have experienced these issues indirectly, they were certainty not to the magnitude of the movies and books we read, but I think that it is important that we are aware that it does exist everywhere.
